1999

  • Joel has had a long illustrious coaching career in the south Puget Sound area over the past 24 years. After brief stops at the University of Puget Sound and Peninsula H.S., he began an 18-year career at Gig Harbor H.S. His boys and girls teams were permanent fixtures at state meets from 1979-1997. Joel’s teams won team titles in 1995 (boys) and 1980 & 1992 (girls), in addition, he coached 4 individual state champions.

    Joel held administrative positions with the Washington State Coaches Association and acted as meet director for a very successful invitational, a director for the South Sound Cross Country Camp, and more recently a meet director for the Westside Classic. Joel returned to his greatest passion in 2003, when he came out of retirement to coach once again at Peninsula H.S. Since then (as of 2012) he has had 5 more individuals on the podium as well as a second (boys) and two third place (girls) teams.

  • Cliff started coaching in 1959 and has coached cross country, track, football, basketball, and baseball. As of 2014 he had 143 seasons of coaching and was still counting. Cliff has always said as long as he has his health, he will coach cross country and Track. All of his cross country and track coaching has been in the Kingco league, with stops at Bellevue, Mercer Island, Interlake, Newport and Tyee Jr High. He also founded the Cascade Striders, a youth club on the Eastside. Cliff has been a head coach, co-head coach, and an assistant. Cliff has had numerous athletes and teams have great success at the state and collegiate level. Many of them have gone on to great success as coaches themselves. Cliff is also a member of the Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame.

1998

  • John was born in Alaska and graduated from Craigmont High School in Idaho in 1960, where he played 4 years of basketball and baseball. He majored in Math and graduated from Whitworth College in 1960. He taught for 30 years at Pasco High School, where he coached basketball and track and organized the school’s first cross-country team. He has been the State Cross Country Meet Director or meet manager since 1988. He also directed the Pasco Track Invite for decades. Both meets showcase the tremendous running talent in the state of Washington.

  • Roger spent his early years growing up in the Midwest and graduated from Richland High School in 1955, where he played on several JV sports teams. He graduated from Western Washington State College in 1960 with a major in Math. During his senior year in college, he served as the Sports Information Director. He taught Math at Edmonds and Woodway High Schools. Roger coached cross country at Edmonds High School from 1960-1966 and Woodway High School from 1967-1970 and 1973-1976. He coached numerous cross country teams to league titles and state competition. Roger founded the Edmonds Invitational cross country meet, one of the state’s earliest invites. Roger also coached basketball for 23 years.

  • Tom coached for 30 years at Edmonds. His teams won 7 boys state titles and his girls won 5 state championships, including two doubles. He was the first President of the Cross Country Coaches Association. Tom remains active in the sport and headed the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame Committee. He has also been inducted in the Snohomish County Hall of Fame.

1997

  • Bob Summers started the cross country program at Mabton in 1965 and coached there for 6 years. He took the tiny B school and ultimately finished 3rd in the Mid-Valley AA League. After Mabton he moved to Tolt High School in Carnation where he resurrected a program that had dissolved two years previously. In his second year at Tolt he led the Demon boys to their first Cascade League Championship. Over the course of 22 years at Tolt, he took countless teams to State, at one point making nine consecutive trips to the Championships. His 1975 boys team placed 4th in State, and in l985 the boys placed third. Bob’s crowning achievements came in l976 and l978 when the boys took home the State Title. Bob spent 22 years as the head CC coach and retired in l992. After his retirement, he was assistant coach in both CC and track at Seattle Christian School. In l994 Seattle Christian’s Head Coach took a one-year sabbatical, and Bob filled in with typical outstanding results….the Warriors posted their first winning record in League History.

1996

  • Father Tom grew up in Montana and taught religion at Seattle Prep. He started coaching cross country because no one else would take the job. He coached at Prep from 1969 to 1980 and had up to 80 boys running on his teams. His boys won Wesco Titles in 1972, 1973, & 1974 and the Metro Title in 1977. Father Tom coached his 1972 boys to a State AA Team Championship with his own runner, Jeff Parietti winning the individual title.

  • Wayne grew up in Yakima and graduated from WestValley in 1964, where he participated in football, basketball, and track. He graduated from CWU in 1968 majoring in PE and technology. He coached cross country at Selah for 28 years. His teams won 8 League Titles, 3 State Championships in 1977, 1978, & 1979, and also 3 second place finishes. Wayne coached two individual state champs, Chip Pierce(1976-1977) and Shawn Bernier in 1980.

  • Chuck coached 22 years at West Valley-Yakima and 3 years at Yakima Valley College. He was the first mid-Valley coach to have a girls cross country team. He qualified 2 teams to state, placing 4 and 5th.

1995

  • Frank grew up in Kent and graduated from O’Dea HS in 1944. At WSU he played varsity basketball and baseball and graduated in 1951. He started cross country at Franklin High School as an intramural sport. He was the cross country coach at Franklin from 1961-1967, Seattle community college from 1968-69, and also coached at Garfield. His boys cross country teams won State Titles in 1964 and 1967. Frank coached 26 teams as head or assistant coach in a variety of sports. His most rewarding achievement was winning the wife lottery by marrying his sweetheart Donna.

  • Brock grew up in Seattle and graduated from Lincoln HS in 1951, where he played football and track. He graduated with a BA and Masters from the UW in 1958. He taught at Luther Burbank, Hamilton, and Nathan Hale High School. At Hale he was assistant track coach and the cross country job came along with it. His teams won 13 Metro titles and placed in the top 6 eight times. He boys won the State Cross Country Title in 1966. Brock served as clerk of the course for the 1972 NCAA Track Champs and was President of the Wash State Track Coaches Association. He also coached the Nathan Hale boys soccer team to a state title in 1985.

  • Keith graduated from Snohomish H.S. in 1945. He graduated from Washington State University and then went back to Snohomish where he started the cross country program. Keith coached cross country from 1956-65 and he was one of the first coaches in the state to coach the sport. In 1956 in the sport’s infancy, Keith helped start the Northwest Cross Country League. His teams competed against schools from British Columbia and ran a postal meet against East Bakersfield H.S. in California. He won every NW League title from 1956-1965 and had state champion teams in 1960 and 1965. In addition, his teams placed 2nd in 1962, 1963, & 1964 and also had two 5th place finishes. At Snohomish H.S., Keith also coached football, basketball, and helped out in the weight room.

1994

  • Lee graduated from Wenatchee H.S. in 1946 and participated in football and track & field. He graduated from Washington State University in 1953 with a major in Physical Education. While at WSU he was part of a record-setting 2-mile relay team at the Drake Relays. He coached and taught at Nespelem High School, White Swan High School, Hudson’s Bay High School, Fort Vancouver High School, and Columbia River High School. Lee coached cross country from 1963-1982 and took 14 boys’ teams and 2 girls’ teams to State. His boys’ team won State titles in 1964 and 1970. His individual cross-country champions were Roscoe Divine (l963) and Jim Ojala (l978).

  • Gary graduated from Kelso H.S. in l960 and played football and competed in track & field. He graduated from Western Washington University in l964, with a degree in History. He took over the cross country program at Castle Rock H.S. and qualified a team for State his first year. His teams won the Tri-County title nearly every year he coached. His boys’ teams made 15 consecutive State appearances from l971-85, 9 times placing in the top-4. His l982 boys’ team won the State ‘A’ title with a record-low score of 38 points. Gary’s girls’ teams participated in the state meet for 3-years. Gary was also active in the Junior Olympics running program in the Castle Rock area.

  • Max graduated from Pullman HS in 1958 and ran track. He graduated from WSU in 1963.

    He started teaching at Richland HS and coaching track. A little later he started the cross country program to get his kids in shape for track. Max coached at Richland from 1966-1972. His teams placed in the top 7 every year with state champs teams in 1969, 1970, & 1971. He later coached at Spokane Community College. Max’s 3 daughters and a son all ran track and cross country.

  • Tracy started the Cross Country program at Rogers (in Spokane) and won state championships in 1963 and 1965. He coached Gerry Lindgren to individual state championships in 1962 and 1963. He also coached at San Jose State.

  • Herm graduated from Coulee Dam H.S. in 1951 and Eastern Washington University in 1955. He coached cross Country at Ferris H.S. from 1969-1982 and took boys teams to state 8 times in his 14 years at the helm of the Saxon program. His teams always placing in the top 4 at the state meet. He coached the Ferris girls’ team only one year in 1981, and they placed 2nd at State Meet. He had 11 individuals finish in the top 10 places at State. Herm coached Rick Riley to a National 2-mile record at Ferris in 1966. After retiring from coaching cross country, Herm spent many years coaching the pole vault to high school athletes in the Spokane area.

  • Len was born in Colorado, moved to Spokane, and ran with Gerry Lindgren for coach Tracy Walters at Rogers H.S. In l966, Len placed 4th in the State Cross Country Meet. He ran for Whitworth College and twice earned All-American honors.

    He coached cross country at North Central H.S. from 1968-1986. His teams qualified for state 9 times, winning the Championship in 1977 and placing 2nd 4 times. Len coached Jim Coombs to an individual State title in 1980. His teams won a string of 26 Greater Spokane League dual meets against some of the legendary coaches in the sport. Len continues to volunteer with North Central.

  • Larry grew up in Vancouver and graduated from Hudson’s Bay HS in l956. He participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He went to Clark CC and graduated from Western Washington College in 1964. He taught at Newport High School and coached cross country and track. His boys won a string of 102 consecutive dual cross country meets and his girls’ team won the first “unofficial” state cross country title in 1974. His boys won 7 KingCo League titles and went to state 8 times, 5 times placing in the top 10. After his retirement, Larry officiated at the State Cross Country and Track Championships.

  • Barry coached at Renton from 1958-86. He had 20 boys state qualifying teams and 8 girls teams that qualified for state as well. His boys won state in 1969.

  • Larry coached at Snohomish from l965-87. He had 12 state qualifying teams, including a second place in 1968.
